Winter Solstice

June 21, 2015

By Ken McLean Sensei

Winter Solstice is the shortest day of the year in winter where the seasonal energy goes deepest in the earth. Summer Solstice, the longest day of the year, is the direct opposite where energy is most expressed outwardly – the high point of Seasonal Energy.

In traditional society, Winter Solstice is celebrated as a time for connecting to our inner nature. It is a time of restoration and rejuvenation. Sometimes at this seasonal phase, one can feel slightly despondent if one is pushing too strongly for outward movement in plans.

However following June 21st Winter Solstice, the energy starts moving back out from its most stagnant or pooled phase and begins to slowly become more active and forward moving. A person can feel more supported for creating their projects and aspirations. In oriental 5 energy understanding this is called water energy moving to tree or wood energy.

The energy of nature as expressed through the season is a powerful force to harmonise with when we are conscious and sensitive to its energy. We can avoid becoming frustrated when its force does not support our action.

We can feel more close to the natural timing of events and then we can act when the timing is right and withdraw when the energy is not there to support our action.

This is harmonising with the ebb and flow one of the aspects of training in Aiki.
